Intestinal homeostasis is determined by the integrity of the intestinal barrier and may be influenced by a variety of stimuli, including physical, chemical, and biological.
Maintaining intestinal barrier function is essential to prevent chronic inflammation that can lead to inflammatory bowel disease and other conditions. Wang and colleagues at the South China Agricultural University, Guangzhou, China, conclude that a growing body of research show that resveratrol has beneficial effects on intestinal homeostasis by impacts influencing intestine tight junction, microbial composition, and inflammation.
Biological effects of resveratrol include antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and anti-cardiovascular disease effects. In their review, Wang and colleagues highlight the applications of resveratrol in treating various intestinal diseases and summarize its effects on intestinal barriers as well as potential mechanisms by which resveratrol exerts its function.
